November 8th Election Results

We did it!

From Marcel L. Groen

Over the last several months I have urged you to make history. Well, folks, you did it.

11-8-11 has become the most significant day in Montgomery County Democratic history.

There are so many people to thank and to recognize. I'll start with Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards and the incredible campaign staff and volunteers they assembled. Political observers will be talking about this campaign for years to come. They had a plan; they executed it and they never let distractions deter them. Josh and Leslie led by example. From February right through until 8 p.m. on election night they worked, worked and worked some more. They were everywhere - train stations, meet and greets, candidate forums, supermarkets. They raised money. They ran a substantive, positive campaign like no other. They simply outworked the other side, and their staff and volunteers were tireless.

I would also like to thank the MCDC organization from bottom to top. Our committee people were magnificent. Our area leaders led. Our staff performed like what it is - the best Democratic staff in Pennsylvania.

The best group of candidates - from our judicial candidates to row office candidates to all of our municipal candidates --- ever assembled in Montgomery County also performed admirably. Richard Haaz and Cheryl Austin now join Lois Murphy as Democrats on the county bench. We elected five row officers. Municipal highlights included winning majorities in Upper Merion and East Norriton.

No political campaign is ever without its disappointments. We share the sadness of those excellent candidates who lost on Tuesday. While we celebrate victory, we also honor those who not only had the courage to enter the public forum, but also worked hard and waged strong, principled, positive campaigns. We are a team, and we win and lose as a team.

Now it is time to govern and repay the voters' confidence in our candidates with hard work, honesty, vision and governments that are responsive, efficient and serve the people's best interests.

Thank you all. You were magnificent. I leave you with three words: eleven, eight, eleven.

Republicans have stooped to a new low: They twisted a year-old statement by Mike Gerber that had nothing to do with the race for the Commonwealth Court & made it seem that he's backing the Republican over Haaz. Here's Gerber's response in the Gazette.

Surprise! No response from the Republicans or the Republican candidate.

In response to the Wisconsin attempts to strip State workers of their collective bargaining rights, the MCDC, at their Endorsement Convention, February 17, 2011 passed the following resolution:

Be it Resolved on February 17, 2011 that:

The Montgomery County Pennsylvania Democratic Committee believes that all workers public and private should have collective bargaining rights to negotiate fair and legally binding contracts with due process rights that protect their members from dictatorial actions by employers and;

That the Montgomery County Pennsylvania Democratic Committee stands in solidarity with the unionized working men and women of the state of Wisconsin in their defense of their collective bargaining rights, and furthermore;

Condemns the actions by Republican Governor Scott Walker and the Republican controlled legislature to use the alleged budget deficit in the state of Wisconsin as a pretext for attempting to eliminate the collective bargaining rights of Wisconsin public employees and stripping them of bargained health and pension benefits.

David Hooper
&
Ameija Sorg-Taylor

From Mr. Hooper:

My name is David Hooper, I've lived in Ambler and attended Wissahickon Schools all my life.

Academically, I have taken all Honors or Advanced Placement courses in my high school career and have been happy to achieve a high GPA while participating in many extracurricular activities. My favorite subjects were Computer Programming, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics. I am a member of the Wissahickon Chapter of the National Honor Society. In addition, I was a National Merit Commended Scholar and received the AP Scholar award for attaining the highest grade possible on all 3 AP tests that I took junior year.

Outside of class, I participated in numerous musical groups at the high school. I was a 3-year member of the concert band, the saxophone section leader in the 2 o'clock jazz band, and the pianist in the jazz combo. I have been a member of the concert chorus and Camerata (the high school's select choir) all four years of high school. I also participated in the men's choir, chamber singer octet, and barbershop quartet from sophomore year on. I was selected for the PMEA District 11 Chorus in 11th and 12th grade. Finally, I was a member of the spring musical in every year of my high school career, performing shows such as Evita and The Phantom of the Opera.

Out of school, my biggest accomplishments were the performances I did with the School of Rock All-Stars. The School of Rock All-Stars is a touring rock music group composed of 20 teenagers who play guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or sing, and it has provided me with the most amazing musical experiences of my life. I am currently in my sixth year with the program, singing and playing keyboards and saxophone. I have performed at Lollapalooza, NAMM, and BB King’s in Times Square. In addition to that, the All-Star program has allowed me to perform with many famous musicians such as Jon Anderson of Yes, Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, Leann Rimes, and many more. It has also granted me many chances for community service, the most recent of which was the Live Aid Remade Tour, where all of the proceeds went to the Haiti Relief Fund. On September 19, 2010, I was given the opportunity to perform for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Awards Ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom in New York City, playing “I Will Survive” with Gloria Gaynor herself, playing in front of UN dignitaries and heads of state.

In the fall, I will be attending Brown University in Providence, RI. At the moment, I am considering a major in Computer Science, but I am looking forward to exploring the unique educational opportunities that Brown will provide me. I sincerely thank the members of the Wissahickon Democratic Committee for their generous award and for helping me pursue my dreams.

I'm looking forward to living up to the ideals of the scholarship.

Thank you very much!
-Dave Hooper

From Ameija Sorg-Tayor:

Thank you Wissahickon Democrats for the Scholarship. I really appreciate it.

The Scholarship money is a lot of help for college. Once again, thank you so much.

Ameija will be going to Temple University in the Fall.
